More than 1 million Arizonans will hit the road for the Independence Day holiday, AAA Arizona forecast Thursday.
That number is about 12 percent lower than the number predicted by the group last year.
“Memorial Day was very, very strong, so perhaps people got the traveling temporarily out of their system from Memorial Day," AAA Arizona spokesperson Valerie Vinyard said. "Or also maybe they’re planning something bigger for Labor Day.”
Vinyard said the fact that Independence Day falls on Monday could also reduce the number of weekend travelers. Those looking to attend a holiday celebration would either have to do so where they live or take an extra day off of work.
Those traveling by car will not need to worry about construction slowing their road trip. The Arizona Department of Transportation will halt work on all road projects for the holiday weekend.
