President Obama invited several southern Arizona residents to join him in Washington this week as he is widely expected to announce stricter controls on gun sales.
The president invited victims, survivors and witnesses of the Jan. 8, 2011 shooting, who have been active in seeking stricter gun control measures, to join him for the announcement Tuesday.
He is expected to announce that background checks will be required to allow a gun purchase at gun shows. Supporters say the measure would keep guns out of the hands of people who intend to use them to commit crimes, but it is a contentious move others say would prevent lawful access to weapons.
The move will be an executive action, meaning the president and his advisors perceive the change is within his power as chief of the executive branch of the government.
As an executive action, the change would not require Congressional approval, though it could be challenged in federal court.
Friday marks the fifth anniversary of the Tucson shooting that killed 6 and wounded 13 others.
